Dailes Theater – Public space
The Dailes Theater building and the public space around it were intended as a single spatial unit in the original project of the building's architect Marta Staņa. The square is designed in the unified style of modernist / brutalist architecture and is the only place of such style in Riga in terms of size and detail. Flat stepped terrace as a component forms the main entrance exterior. It is covered with strips of concrete slabs, lines of granite steps and strips of clinker bricks, creating a pure geometric shape and interplay of planes.
Project intends to:
- restore the original pavement and details,
- return the lost original pavement area between the main entrance and the corner of Brīvības / Bruņinieku streets,
- use parts of existing pavement details that have remained in a satisfactory condition. Existing concrete slabs that have remained in a satisfactory condition will be removed and reused in lower load areas.
- cover the part of the square between the existing parking lots along Brīvības Street and the original pavement with clinker-type cobblestone pavement, similar to the existing brown / gray clinker brick strips, thus separating Dailes Square from the street with a darker strip.
- create a new design element - a multifunctional object with various functions – bench with integrated space for information placement, as well as with lighting function towards the main entrance of the theater. Information is placed on the surface using metal engraving technicue and includes info about the building - the author of the building, architect Marta Staņa and theater creator and director Eduards Smiļģis. On the side of the pedestal facing Brīvības Street there is an inscription in concrete – “Dailes theater”.
-adjust and improve the free-form landscape in the existing elevated relief zone "hill" at the corner of Brīvības, Charlotte and Miera streets, including it in the overall layout geometry, restoring greenery, pavements, landscape elements, lighting, but preserving the artist's Irbīte monument site.
- solve access to the Dailes theater for vehicles and people, provide the necessary parking lots, at the same time zoning the common territory.
