Daugavas gāte
Daugavas gāte is located in the Old Town, in the section between the Castle Square and Daugava embankment, and adjoins the southern facade of Riga Castle.
Daugavas gāte connects to the entrance to the Riga Castle Castellum, where after the completion of the first and second stages of the restoration and reconstruction of Riga Castle the main entrance to the Latvian National History Museum will be.
Riga Castle is one of the most remarkable architectural monuments in the Baltics. Construction project of the Latvian National History Museum is currently in progress in the oldest part of the castle - Castellum. One of the most important solutions of Daugavas gāte reconstruction project is a new retaining wall offseted from castle’s basement wall (former first floor), thus exposing the historical wall constructions. This is necessary to 1) solve the problem of wall moisture; 2) solve the drainage of rainwater from Daugavas gāte by resolving the collection of rainwater in the rainwater sewerage system by draining the rainwater into the Daugava.
Project includes extensive engineering communications solutions - dismantling of existing heating networks and construction of new networks, construction of a new rainwater sewerage network, as well as interconnection of other engineering networks. The existing heating network route line is being pushed from the southern wall of Riga Castle to form a new retaining wall, as well as lowered to provide the vertical layout required for the functioning of the museum.
The dominant paving material of Daugavas gāte is a granite pavement, modeled based on swedish cobblestone historically used in Old Riga, but with a brushed-smooth surface to ensure an accessible, easy-to-use pavement. In order to emphasize the design concept and preserve the historical heritage, it is planned to lay the original swedish cobblstone close to the facades of the buildings.
