Family apartment house in Kolka
The main creators of the aesthetics of the new architecture are the existing masonry architecture, the context of the environment and the characteristic construction traditions of Kolka. Historical wall is highlighted as the main value. At the same time the new architecture has its own asset. The historic wall is a key factor in creating modern architecture – a new wide glazing on the second floor is designed as a contrasting volume to the existing building.
To create a more functional second floor, the roof ridge is raised, expanding the living space. The glazed exterior walls on the second floor offset from the historic cornice, creating a terrace almost in the entire length of the building - symmetrical to the two longest facades.
Two roof extensions are designed, creating a convenient access to the second floor - on one side with a sea view, and on the other with a staircase. The new volume fits in the symmetry determined by the historic building.
Building is divided into eight separate apartments. All four ground floor apartments have both an entrance from the hall and a private exit to the terrace. The four second-floor apartments have an entrance from the second-floor hall, where each apartment has its own private outdoor balcony.
