Latvian National Theater Extension
Latvian National Theater Extension
In collaboration with “Trīs Arhitektūra”
The building of the Latvian National Theater is an important cultural building that has a special place in the context of the history of our country. Along with the building, its location is also special - the theater was built in the 19th century as a novelty of urban planning at that time - in a circle of boulevards, where significant cultural buildings were built and lush gardens and parks were created for the residents of Riga to enjoy. Kronvalda Park with its large oak alleys is an oasis in the heart of the city, where you can enjoy cultural life at the same time.
The new extension is designed as a modern, functional theater building, which express the values of our time. At the same time, the new volume is a continuation of the existing building and is formed in a single ensemble.
The extension of the new theater is a conversation between the park and the city. The offered volume, respecting the building traditions of the boulevard circle, is sensitively planted among the trees of the alley and conceptually continues the theme of tree trunks in architecture.
The facades of the historical buildings are decorated with ornaments, breaking the large scale of the building. The ‘tree trunks’ used in the façades of the new extension - iron columns, as well as glazed openings behind them divide the long façade and merge the building with the surrounding tree alley. The columns are placed on the perimeter of the building with an offset from the walls and glazing, thus creating a feeling of depth.
The extension of the new theater serves as a new place of social significance in the city, where you can enjoy the cultural life and take refuge from the fast pace of life in the city. The landscaped forecourt, access to the canal bank and the opportunity to enjoy the view over the park from the cafe terrace is a benefit not only for every citizen, but also for a guest of Riga. In turn, the functional and spacious theater premises - workshops, warehouses and the new 'Black-box' hall allow the theater to grow and develop, offering the audience an ever-expanding repertoire of performances.
