New courtyard in Ventspils
The task of the proposal for spatial development of the quarter in Ventspils, Platā Street 8 is to create a modern, architecturally and artistically high-quality, functional group of buildings that would organically fit into the historical urban environment with volume, detail and scale, but at the same time differentiate and bring modern features into the city.
A multifunctional architectural language is offered, which allows to easily adapt the interior of the building to various functions and future development scenarios, while creating certain appearance, which directly refers to the architectural context of Ventspils. The building spatially-visually reads as a 1 + 2 - glazed one-storey commercial space, and above it a two-storey wooden residential building. The density of wood (or metal) cladding changes according to the privacy of the room, separating the office space from the apartments.
Each floor is connected with the city according to its function. The glazed commercial premises on the ground floor are becoming part of the urban environment. The glazed offices on the first floor have openwork timber board cladding, offering more privacy to employees. In the evening, they shine in the lights, together with the first floor reflecting the public function of the building. The second floor apartments are personal and private. The rhythm built into the timber cladding gives the impression of a large roof that descends along the building and gradually fades away as you approach the ground.
