RIGA CIRCUS
In collaboration with “Trīs Arhitektūra”
The circus building to be restored and rebuilt is located in the area of the Riga Boulevard Circle, in the block between Merķeļa and Alfrēda Kalniņa Streets.
The proposed project is based on a thorough, sensitive understanding of the building, based on research and analysis. At the same time, understanding the functional requirements and the ability to ensure a 'live' interaction between the building and its occupant was an integral part of the work process.
The ability to change and adapt, while maintaining a unified image and clarity in its basic form, also serves as a key guiding principle for its further development. The restoration concept proposed in the project can best be described as a set of many modifications that do not break the link with the existin, but rather complement and adapt it.
One of the most important solutions of the project is the restoration and strengthening of the historic Circus Dome. We retain and restore the existing steel beams as a monument. We create a new roof structure over the existing dome - 2T 300 load-bearing frame with 16 beams and 2 horizontal rings. The new roof structure through additional columns rests on the reinforced base of the existing arena. The new roof structure geometrically replicates the existing dome.
The synthesis of the existing and new volumes of the building is formed following the historically established principles of perimeter block development. A network of inner courtyards is created within the closed quarter. The courtyards of the circus complex are planned as a dynamic urban space, thus strengthening the connection between the Circus and the city.
